Pepper, 2002) Dadurch ist der Nutzer nicht mehr in der Lage, zu entscheiden welche Informationen für ihn wichtig sind und welche nicht. Er benötigt zusätzlich viel Zeit, um die ganzen Informationen auf ihre Relevanz zu prüfen.
Ein weiteres challenge ist, dass der Nutzer die benötigten Informationen nicht ausfindig machen kann, da er nicht weiß wo diese zu finden sind oder diese nicht existieren. Informationen sind unbrauchbar, wenn sie nicht gefunden oder verknüpft werden, beschreiben Le Grand, Soto und Dodds dieses challenge. Ein subject Map ist ein mächtiges Werkzeug zur Lösung dieser Probleme. Der subject Maps usual beschreibt Wissensstrukturen und verknüpft diese mit den Informationsressourcen. subject Maps bilden somit eine Brücke zwischen der Wissensrepräsentation und dem Informationsmanagement. Dadurch erleichtern sie die enterprise und Navigation sowie die zielgerichtete Suche in großen, ständig wachsenden Informationsbeständen. (Vgl. Le Grand/Soto, 2000)
Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, das subject Maps Konzept sowie Methoden zur Erstellung einer subject Map vorzustellen. Außerdem soll im Rahmen des Wissensmanagements das Leistungspotential einer subject Map und die damit verbundenen Einsatzmöglichkeiten aufgezeigt werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit gliedert sich dazu in five Abschnitte. Nach der gerade behandelten Einleitung erfolgt in Kapitel 2 eine Einführung in das allgemeine Konzept von subject Maps sowie eine Beschreibung des erweiterten criteria, XML subject Maps. In Kapitel three werden Methoden zur Erstellung einer subject Map behandelt und verschiedene Visualisierungsmöglichkeiten diskutiert. Anschließend erfolgt in Kapitel four der Einsatz von subject Maps im Wissensmanagement, wobei auf unterschiedliche Einsatzmöglichkeiten im Unternehmen und net eingegangen wird und das Leistungspotential einer subject Map eruiert wird.
